It's spooky season and there's nothing scarier to many birders than a nondescript mystery sparrow! Join this  walk for beginner to intermediate birders as we take advantage of the peak of sparrow migration along some of Flagstaff's nicest riparian habitat.

Harry Jones will lead a 2.5-hr walk sponsored by Northern Arizona Audubon. We will look for and focus on identifying Chipping, White-crowned, Song, and Lincoln's Sparrows in addition to the large number of junco subspecies that overwinter in our area.

We'll also enjoy the diversity of ducks, grebes, raptors, kinglets, and finches likely to be present at this time of year. This location has yielded a number of vagrant or uncommon sparrows in late October, including White-throated, Swamp, Golden-crowned, and Harris's, which we will pay special attention for.

Date: Thursday, October 26, 2025
Time: 8:00–10:30 AM

Meeting point: Meet at the cul-de-sac on South Babbitt Drive. Parking is available in the Sam's Club lot nearby.

What to bring: Please bring binoculars if you have them, along with water, a hat, and sunscreen. The first hour of the morning could be chilly, so warm, layered clothing is recommended. The walk will be over flat terrain on level dirt and concrete.

Any questions, contact Harry Jones at hjones@birdpop.org.

Register so we can notify you directly of any updates, including cancellations, delays, or weather-related changes.
