Northern Arizona Audubon Bird Sanctuaries (NAABS) are places certified by the Northern Arizona Audubon Society (NAAS) to provide regionally important bird habitat and exceptional birdwatching opportunities. These places are reasonably accessible to the public and possess one or more of the following attributes:

A regionally high number of birds
A  regionally  high diversity of bird species
One or more regionally noteworthy species regularly present at least seasonally

 

The purpose of the designation is to increase public interest in birds and awareness of the natural values of these special areas.

Each site will have a person appointed as site steward, whose duties include:

  • Coordinating publicity activites
  • Monitoring the site on a regular bases to identify concerns and needed maintenance
  • Recruit volunteer labor as needed, and coordinate the work
  • Continue collecting and updating data on the site
  • Seek opportunities to facilitate and/or support public education and youth organizations
